A propagation technique for native tundra bryophytes for Arctic ecosystem restoration

چکیده

Extreme environmental conditions and limited understanding of ecosystem processes community dynamics pose significant challenges for Arctic restoration activities. As pioneer species, bryophytes are critical to the function structure northern ecosystems play an important role in facilitating soil microhabitat development. A total 11 species were collected from a mixed near Lac de Gras Northwest Territories, Canada, 12 week laboratory study was conducted. Three propagule types (large = 2.1–40 mm, medium 1.0–2 small <1 mm phyllids) three slurries (distilled water, beer, buttermilk) used determine effective bryophyte propagation techniques introduction sites. Medium-size fragments more than large or propagating as they led greater plant count cover. Water beer buttermilk, although their effects decreased after weeks. Bryum pseudotriquetrum Hedw. most abundant propagated, followed by Aulacomnium turgidum (Wahlenb.) Schwägr. Ceratodon purpureus (Hedw.) Brid. This suggests that with medium-size distilled water would be efficient field application if revegetation is focus.

Disentangling trophic relationships in a High Arctic tundra ecosystem through food web modeling.

Determining the manner in which food webs will respond to environmental changes is difficult because the relative importance of top-down vs. bottom-up forces in controlling ecosystems is still debated. This is especially true in the Arctic tundra where, despite relatively simple food webs, it is still unclear which forces dominate in this ecosystem. Our primary goal was to assess the extent to ...

Rough-Legged Buzzards, Arctic Foxes and Red Foxes in a Tundra Ecosystem without Rodents

Small rodents with multi-annual population cycles strongly influence the dynamics of food webs, and in particular predator-prey interactions, across most of the tundra biome. Rodents are however absent from some arctic islands, and studies on performance of arctic predators under such circumstances may be very instructive since rodent cycles have been predicted to collapse in a warming Arctic. ...
